Analysis of the match between Chelsea and Benfica
Chelsea have been struggling with inconsistency this season. Most recently, they suffered a shocking 1-3 defeat to Brighton at Stamford Bridge, a result that dropped the Blues to eighth place in the Premier League table with only eight points.
Now, Chelsea will have to quickly put that setback behind them as they prepare to host Benfica – a club currently managed by their former boss, Jose Mourinho.
Benfica, on the other hand, earned a win over Gil Vicente at the weekend. Under Mourinho’s guidance, the Portuguese side are unbeaten in three consecutive matches and currently sit third in the Primeira Liga standings. Like Chelsea, Benfica will be eager to pick up points in the Champions League after both teams lost their opening fixtures.
In terms of form, there is little to separate the two sides. Chelsea have won just one of their last five matches, while Benfica have managed two victories in the same span. Chelsea will look to their home advantage, having won four of their last six competitive games at Stamford Bridge. However, Benfica boast an impressive away record, unbeaten in their last nine matches across all competitions.
History, though, favors Chelsea. The Blues are unbeaten in five previous encounters with Benfica, winning four and drawing once. Including their extra-time victory in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, Chelsea have effectively won every meeting with the Portuguese giants. All signs point to Mourinho’s “homecoming” being far from a happy one.
